Educators
in Private Practice was founded in 1979 by a group of teachers who met in
the special education credential program at Dominican University. After
graduation, they decided to offer tutoring, testing, and educational therapy
in individual private practices rather than in a school setting. They created
EPP as a means to share information and expertise, to support each other,
and to promote their services.
Since 1979, EPP has grown from that initial group of eight teachers to almost
one hundred members, including educational therapists, reading specialists,
math specialists, speech and language therapists, educational evaluators,
psychotherapists, neuropsychologists, content area tutors, and tutors for
the SAT and other standardized tests.
EPP members work individually in their own private practices. Members vary
in the services they provide, the locations where they tutor, and their
fees. Some specialize in specific age groups, such as elementary, middle
or high school students. Some offer services to infants and pre-schoolers;
others work with adults and college students. Most of our members see clients
in their offices or homes, while some will go to the studentsŐ homes or
schools or to a public place such as a library. Fees range from $30 to $135
per hour, depending on the service provided and the qualifications of the
provider.
As a group, EPP provides free consultation and referral for students and
parents seeking tutoring or educational services. A referral list is mailed
each September to public and private schools, pediatricians, child psychologists,
and agencies in Marin County. Referrals are also available by phone (415-464-0322)
or through this website. EPP also provides continuing education at bi-monthly
meetings, in order to keep members current on topics such as educational
trends, teaching strategies, and interventions for learning disabilities.
